How is a Mate properly prepared?

The preparation of the mate is an essential point in this practice, since the intensity of its flavour will depend on a well done process.

To begin with, we must identify the necessary elements:

- Yerba Mate: This is the name of the herb that characterises this drink. Its scientific name is Ilex Paraguariensis and it is native to Paraguay.

- Hot water: The water should be very hot, but not boiling, as it could burn the herb. To keep the water at the perfect temperature for longer and to prolong the drink, it is advisable to use a thermos flask.

- Bombilla: This is the "straw" used for drinking and filtering the powder and sprigs of dried herb.

- Mate: This is the "cup" used for drinking. Nowadays different materials are used, such as ceramic, wood or even silicone, but the original mate is of vegetable origin: a specially prepared dried gourd.

Now, get to know the tips we have for you and become an expert soon, just by following our guidelines:

1. Heat the water to about 80ºC (do not boil).

2. Fill three quarters of the capacity of the mate with grass.

3. Cover the mouth of the Mate with your hands and tilt it so that the herb is at 45º.

4. Pour warm water in the bottom and let it steep until it is absorbed.

5. Cover the mouth of the Bombilla with your thumb and place the filter part at the end of the tilt.

6. Press down on the lever with the rest of your hand to straighten the Bulb.

7. Pour hot water around the Bombilla and start to taste it.

It is very important to always try to keep the top of the mate dry; this will help the flavour stay strong.

When you are done, don't forget to empty the mate, rinse it with plenty of water and let it dry. This will keep the mate in good condition for the next dose.
